Controlling Those Weeds Around the Pond
Garden Advice for Pond Weed Control
As the intensity of light levels starts to increase during the Spring period it's not only you prized ornamentals that are going to grow, but your pond weeds too and using a chemical weed killers is not solution in this instance. Here we need to use a little physical input and natural intervention.
With new ponds the natural water balance will not have established itself appropriately and these conditions will be ideal growing territory for pond weeds. Oxygenating plants once established really help to control weeds by starving them of the opportunity of light and essential nutrients.
The more common types of weed to look put for and eliminate with a little human intervention are Blanket weed and Duckweed, both of which can thrive in the pond.
Blanket weed is an algae will thrive in mid spring and uses quantities of nitrogen and light to grow. Mass growth of the wee can be simply removed by using a stick to wrap the weed around and remove. Duckweed is made up of small clusters of leaves with roots and whilst the fish tend to enjoy eating this type of vegetation it tends to grow very fast and soon covers the pond blocking out the essential light required for other forms of life. Duckweed can be removed using strainer or colanders.
