Growing Your Own from Seeds

One of the greatest pleasures of being a keen gardener is the satisfaction of offering garden advice from positive experience and success in growing plants from seed to fruition.

Using seeds is probably the most common and possibly the easiest method of propagating large numbers of plants. The seeds themselves can vary widely in the their appearance and germination requirements. Growth rate will also vary widely, some plants flourish in cool bright conditions whilst others will prefer warm and dark conditions.

Beginning Propagation

As with most gardening projects the most important element is getting your tools right before you start the job and number of different sized pots, we find clay pots work extremely well. Seed trays are also another important element and rectangular or square trays are best, certainly for placing neatly on window sills etc.

For great results in germination use a multipurpose soil less (sterile) mix. Don't forget the labels! One of the most common problems amateur gardeners incur in the propagating stage is they forget what seeds they have placed in what containers which can often be disastrous if you then put the wrong seeds in the wrong conditions.
